How to Find Your Purpose
Do you ever feel like something is missing? Does it seem as if you are going through the motions but not living a life of purpose? You want more, and you need more. But you can’t figure out what it could be. You don’t quite know how to get there.
Guess what? Your hunch is correct. You were created for more. You do have a purpose here on this earth. But as long as you are unsure of what it is, you are robbed of your brilliance.
Maybe you are just out of college and you don’t know what you want to do with your life. You got a degree, but now you are not sure where to get a job. Perhaps you are a new mother. You are so grateful to have your child, yet you long to be making a difference in the world as well.
Maybe you have been through the diaper trenches and the teenage roller coaster and your kids are launched. Now what? Who are you anyway? You’ve put so much on hold for so long. Or, perhaps you are a career woman. You have been in the game for so long. It has worked for you, and you are meeting your corporate goals, yet you still feel empty. You are not quite sure why, but you just can’t shake the uncertainty.
When we are living life on purpose, everything falls into place. We are motivated, fulfilled, and focused. What we focus on is what we become. When we aren’t living on purpose, we are spinning in circles without direction.
Try this instead:
1. Clarify Your Values and Passions.
· What motivates you?
· What are you doing when you feel at your best?
· Why do you live where you live?
· Where do you love to travel?
· What is important in relationships?
· What do you read and watch? Why?
· What do you love/hate?
· What would you do if you had all of the resources in the world and knew you couldn’t fail?
· What gives you energy or drains it away?
· What situations in the world keep you up at night?
· Who do you want to help? How can you help?
When we are living out our passions, we live a life of purpose. Find out what drives you. Purpose often follows pain.
2. Examine Your Possibilities.
Now that you’ve clarified your values, what do you want? What is possible? What opportunities and passions are unique to you? What obstacles are in your way? Negative self-talk? Doubt cast by others? Poor time management?
Cast your vision far and wide.
3. Take Action.
Move! Try things out. Make mistakes. Roll up your sleeves and get messy. Fail forward.
Your first attempt doesn’t have to be perfect. You just have to try. As you take action, your purpose will become clearer. You will feel energized because you are making progress and coming closer and closer to your goals. The energy you feel will make you feel even more energized, and before you know it, you are on mission and unstoppable!
