Be Your Own Valentine
There is no more important relationship we have in our lives than the one we have with ourselves.
Our ability to serve our friends and family starts with how well we serve ourselves.
Loving yourself well isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
So what if we used this upcoming Valentine’s Day to be our own valentine?
As women, we tend to put so much pressure on this Hallmark holiday. Single women feel shame or sadness because they don’t “have a Valentine” while those in romantic relationships add an exorbitant amount of pressure and expectation to the day like it’s supposed to represent how much your significant other loves you.
Then you layer on comparison: “He doesn’t love me as much as Jane’s husband loves her! Look at all he did for her!”
And it’s game over.
So what about if we reframed this Day of Love to remind ourselves that we, as women, need to love ourselves first.
Loving yourself can mean saying no to something you didn’t want to do when you typically would have said yes just to please people.
Loving yourself means setting a recurring time on your calendar for the things that bring you joy.
Loving yourself means picking up an old hobby you’ve long put down.
Loving yourself means healing past emotional wounds so you’re able to fully embrace your present and future self.
Loving yourself means investing in your emotional and mental wellness in a way you haven’t been doing up to now.
Loving yourself means letting go of comparison.
Loving yourself means feeling grateful for your unique life, gifts, and strengths.
Loving yourself starts from the inside out.
It’s helping women love themselves that became a catalyst for why I do what I do every day.
As a therapist and counselor, my ultimate goal is to work myself out of a job. I want to help people get to a place where they don’t need me anymore. Where they’re living a life fulfilled, happy, and healthy.
And that starts with figuring out why we feel stuck or stagnant and learning how to love ourselves.
